2011/2012

Er zijn nogal wat gezaghebbenden die voorspellen dat er in 2012 iets bijzonders gaat gebeuren.

• Nostradamus: spreekt van een kolossale asteroide die alles wegvaagt
• Albert Einstein: er gaat een polaire omkering van de aarde plaatsvinden
• Maya’s: spreken van een overgang naar een nieuwe wereld (naar de vijfde dimensie)
• Profetien van Sint Malachy: voorspellen slechts nog 1 paus
• Hopi indianen: zien een wereldwijde purificatie van de aarde
• Bijbel: spreekt van een naderende apocalypse (Armageddon)
• Edgar Caye: voorspelt de terugkeer van Atlantis
• Chinese I-ching: voorspellen het einde van de geschiedenis

Grofweg zijn alle overtuigingen in 2 categorieen in te delen: optimistisch en pessimistisch. Voor elk heb ik een mix gemaakt.

2011:end

De  haperende economie komt echt voorgoed tot stilstand en dwingt ons wereldwijd tot een zwerversbestaan, terrorisme zegeviert, kwaadwillende ruimtewezens nemen bezit van onze aarde, internationale spanningen in Noord Afrika leiden tot een catastrofale derde wereldoorlog, straling uit exploderende Japanse kerncentrales doet ons een langzame pijnlijke dood sterven, onze ledematen sterven vroegtijdig af door iPad-RSI, uit de Nextopiaanse expectations-society voortkomend omgekeerd Darwinisme leidt tot het scenario uit de film Wall-E (iedereen naar de maan want op de aarde valt niet meer te leven).

2012:beginning

Burgerrevoluties zetten door en brengen alle kwaadwillende regimes ten val, duurzaamheid wordt de standaard, de USA trekken zich terug van het wereldtoneel voor 10 jaar van bezinning, China trekt zich terug uit Tibet, zelfverantwoordelijkheid maakt gezag en detentie overbodig, liefde wordt de nieuwe valuta met geluk als rente, bruto nationaal produkt wordt bruto nationaal geluk, we zien mogelijkheden in plaats van beperkingen, hebzucht wordt vrijgevigheid, huilen wordt lachen, donker wordt licht, winter wordt zomer, de wrede grijze koude gruweldagen trekken weg in de verte en maken plaats voor een verkwikkend warme gloed die iedereen met liefde en geluk overgiet en doet uitzien naar de toekomst.

There’s quite some authorities who predict something special is going to happen in 2012.

2011:end

The economy will melt down for good forcing us to live like rats, terrorism will prevail, evil space aliens will take control of the earth, the international conflict in Northern Africa will lead to a catastrophic third world war, radiation from leaking Japanese nuclear plants causes us to die slowly and painfully, our limbs will die away from iPad-RSI, reversed Darwinism caused by the Nextopian expectations-society will lead to the scene from the movie Wall-E (people living on the moon because the earth is too polluted).

2012:beginning

Civil revolutions will collapse all evil regimes, durability will be the standard, love will be the new currency with happiness as interest, the USA will withdraw their selves from the world stage and go in retreat for 10 years, brut national product will become brut national happiness, personal responsibility will make authority and detention superfluous, we will see possibilities instead of limitations, China will retreat from Tibet, greed becomes generosity, crying becomes laughing, winter becomes summer, dark becomes light, the cruel grey cold days of horror disappear in the distance and make room for a refreshing warm glow which fills everybody with love and happiness, longing for the future.

Almost forgot to tell that I published an eBook the other day, titled “Social media strategy in 7 simple steps from supersmall to superbig”. And, quite some positive reactions already! Wereld 2.0, daar gaan we / World 2.0, here we go

Het gaat helemaal niet slecht met de wereld. Ik heb, werkelijk waar, nog nooit zoveel zin gehad in een nieuw jaar. Er gaan zoveel goeie dingen gebeuren in 2011, ik voel het gewoon. Het mooie is: ook al is het niet zo, dan nog voel ik me zo en denk ik dat het zo is. En aangezien ik ervan overtuigd ben dat mijn werkelijkheid, mijn toekomst, in mijn denken ontstaat, gaat het zodoende toch gebeuren.

Jippie!

Maar waarom denk ik dat dan? Nou, onder andere omdat ik steeds meer intiatieven tegenkom die op wereldschaal echt een grote impact kunnen gaan maken. Neem bijvoorbeeld BiDnetwork.org, een organisatie die ondernemers in ontwikkelingslanden ondersteunt bij het maken van een goed businessplan en dan vervolgens koppelt aan westerse investeerders. Wat een pracht idee. En het werkt nog ook! Ze bestaan 5 jaar, zitten inmiddels in 12 landen en hebben meer dan 34.000 leden. BiD nu, is van plan om de kracht van social media te gaan gebruiken in hun streven om mensen te koppelen. En dan wordt hun werk pas echt krachtig. Het gemak waarmee, binnen social media, mensen die elkaar nodig hebben kunnen interacteren op mondiale schaal, kan echt een reuze stap voorwaarts zijn in de communicatie tussen oost en west. Vooral als de groei van internet in derde wereld landen doorgaat in het huidige tempo en een internetaansluiting betaalbaar wordt voor iedereen.

Collaborative Consumption (CC) dan. CC gaat ervan uit dat eigendom achterhaald is. Wat heb je aan een rij boeken of cd’s in de kast als je ze toch nooit leest  of beluistert? Het schijnt dat een boormachine in zijn totale levensduur gemiddeld 12 tot 13 minuten wordt gebruikt.[1] Eeuwig zonde! Wat nou als je ‘m zou kunnen verhuren en er zodoende nog wat geld voor zou kunnen vangen? Nu zijn er al mensen die dat  jarenlang doen; neem als voorbeeld Noppes.nl. Een Amsterdams ruilnetwerk, waarbij goederen en diensten tegen elkaar worden geruild, voor Noppes J (een alternatief betaalmiddel). Hartstikke leuk natuurlijk, en zo zijn er vast nog 1000 andere netwerkjes die hetzelfde doen. En dat is nou juist het probleem. Het zijn allemaal aparte netwerkjes. Wat zou er gebeuren als heel de wereld hetzelfde netwerk gaat gebruiken? Dan krijg je een krachtig iets. Uiteraard moet zo’n netwerk, om goed te functioneren, locatie-specifieke gebruikers hebben: het heeft niet zoveel zin een potje tandenstokers de hele wereld rond te laten vliegen omdat iemand in Australie die toevallig wilde ruilen met jouw flesopener. Het systeem moet zo ingericht worden dat alle dingen die dichtbij zijn te halen, ook van dichtbij komen. Heb jij echter een superzeldzaam iets waar diezelfde persoon in Australie naar op zoek is, dan bestaat er wel altijd de mogelijkheid om er toch aan te komen. Alleen moet je dan meer betalen, en duurt het langer voordat je het hebt.

Enfin, al verder denkend werd ik hoe langer hoe enthousiaster:  wauw, eindelijk is het er dan, collaborative consumption, nu gaan we het meemaken.

Nee dus.

Er is echt totaal geen call-to-action te vinden op de site. Er is helemaal nog geen netwerk. Je kunt nergens een user aanmaken. Het is er gewoon nog helemaal niet. Het enige dat er is, is een hoop theorie over hoe het zou kunnen zijn. Nou ja zeg! Ik heb ze dus ook een mail gestuurd waarin ik aanbied om dit door te ontwikkelen. Ben erg benieuwd. Ik houd jullie op de hoogte!

It’s not going bad with the world at all. Really, I never felt better about the coming year than now. So much good stuff is going to happen in 2011, I can just feel it. The funny thing is, even if it isn’t so, then still I can feel it and really think it’s true. And since I’m convinced that my reality, my future, originates from my thoughts, it will happen no matter what. Yippee!

But then, why do I think this way? Well, partly because more and more I stumble upon initiatives which, on a global scale, could really make a big impact. For instance, take a look at BiDnetwork.org, an organization which supports entrepreneurs in developing countries in making a sound business plan and, after that, connects those entrepreneurs to western investors. What a great idea. And it works! Since their origin 5 years ago they are present in 12 countries already and have more than 34.000 members. Now, BiD is planning to use the strength of social media in their quest to connect people. This way, their efforts will become really powerful. The ease with which people who need each other can connect within social media, on a global scale, could be a huge step forward in the communication between east and west. Especially, if internet connections in the third world continue to grow and become affordable for everyone.

Collaborative Consumption (CC), then. CC’s philosophy is that ownership is outdated. What’s the use of books or cd’s when they are only catching dust on shelves? It seems that the average drill is used 12 to 13 minutes in its total lifespan.[2] What a waste! What if you could lease the drill to others and, consequently, earn some money from that! Now, there are people who do this for quite some time already. ‘Noppes’, for instance, an Amsterdam-based network which exchanges goods and services for Noppes (an alternative currency, which means ‘nothing’ in Dutch). Very cool of course, and it’s probably possible to find a thousand other networks who do the same. And that’s quite the problem: they are all separate from each other. What if the whole world would start using the same network? Now that would be powerful. Of course, for something like that to work it takes location-specific users: it’s no use to have a box of toothpicks fly around the globe because somebody on the other side of the world would like to exchange it for your bottle opener. The system should be equipped so that things you can get nearby should be offered nearby. In case however you’d possess a rare object which a far-away person is looking for, there should always be a possibility to obtain it. Only, in such a case, you’d have to pay more, and it’d take longer before it reaches you.

Anyway, thinking about it got me more enthusiastic with the minute: wow, collaborative consumption, finally, it’s here!

Well, I got disappointed a bit.

No matter how long I searched the site, I couldn’t find any call-to-action whatsoever. There is no network. You cannot create a user profile. It’s just not there yet. The only thing to find is a lot of theory about how it could be. Well, then, time for action! So, I sent them an email offering my help to develop this into a working thing. I’m curious! And will keep you informed :-.

T-mobile: How to not survive an economic crisis

-Klantenservice T-mobile, u spreekt met …, waarmee kan ik u van dienst zijn?

Dag, met Klaasse, ik wil mijn contract met jullie per omgaande opzeggen.

-Dat kan meneer Klaasse, wat is uw mobiele telefoonnummer?

Eh, hebben jullie geen nummerherkenning?

Nee.

-Mag ik u vragen wat de reden is van opzegging?

Dat mag u vragen. U valt, naar mijn mening, onder de categorie bedrijven die, in de beginfase van bestaan, marktaandeel en positive brandattitude verwerven door uitstekende kwaliteit en service te bieden, en als de klanten eenmaal binnen zijn (de meeste met langdurige contracten) ernstig gaan compromiteren aan diezelfde kwaliteit en service.  Ik zal u wat voorbeelden noemen.

Ik heb een iPhone van de zaak. In het begin werkte alles fantastisch. Goeie dekking, lekkere snelheid, zoals het hoort. En wat is daar, twee jaar later, nog van over? Geen ene drol. Jullie hebben dus, in het beste geval, niet de moeite genomen om te kijken of jullie netwerk wel klaar is voor de hoeveelheid dataverkeer die het aantal iPhonegebruikers waaraan jullie een iPhone-abonnement verkopen, genereert. In het slechtste geval geven julllie er geen zak om.

Een ander voorbeel betreft uzelf, namelijk de T-mobile klantenservice. Ik weet namelijk zeker dat u een fout gaat maken in dit klantcontact. Want dat gebeurt altijd. Vijf jaar geleden gebeurde dat vrijwel nooit.  Bovendien was jullie nummer tot voor kort altijd gratis. Nu moet ik ineens betalen.

-Hoe komt u daar bij?

Nou ik belde laatst het gratis, zakelijk nummer wat ik altijd bel en stelde naast m’n zakelijke vraag ook nog een vraag over m’n eigen nummer (wat nooit een probleem was), en toen kreeg ik te horen dat ik daarvoor uw betaalde 0900 nummer moest bellen.

-Als u naar het 06- klantenservice nummer belt, dan is dat gratis.

Het 06-klantenservice nummer zegt u? Nou dat hoor ik voor het eerst, dat had uw collega er wel bij mogen zeggen. Enfin, het staaft mooi mn theorie, want anders was dat gesprek namelijk foutloos verlopen. Ok, nou nog een aantal dingen …. (in totaal ben ik zo’n vijf tot tien minuten aan het woord geweest).

-Goed meneer Klaasse, het is duidelijk, ik ga u doorverbinden met de afdeling opzeggingen.

Huh? Spreek ik daar dan niet mee?!

-Eh, nee.

Maar ik heb toch net ‘opzeggingen’ gekozen in het keuzemenu?

-Eh, ja.

… Goed, verbind me maar door dan.

-Meneer Klaasse, ik heb van mijn collega begrepen dat u uw abonnement wilt opzeggen.

Dat heeft u goed begrepen.

-Mag ik u vragen wat hiervoor de reden is?

Haha! Precies dit is daarvoor de reden. Heeft u niks doorgekregen van uw collega?

-Hmm, er staat hier bij de gespreknotities opgegeven: ‘netwerkfout’.

Haha!! That’s it?

-Eh, ja.

Nou, dat is dan een gemiste kans. Ik heb aan uw collega vijf tot 10 minuten gratis customer feedback gegeven. En ik ga het niet nog een keer doen. Gemiste kans, zullen we maar zeggen!

-Wat bedoelt u precies?

Laat maar.

Dj-ing 3.0

It’s Fridaynight, time to head off to the venue where it’s all gonna happen tonight: and you’re booked on primetime. As you step out the door, melancholically you glance at your once so beloved dj-bag in the corner of the room, smile, and head out in the dark night.

It was a fresh nice bicycle-ride, only having to carry your phone, wallet, keys and usb-stick. After having a few drinks with your friends, you step onto the dj-booth and say ‘hi’ to the playing dj, which is doing a pretty good job warming up the place. Luckily you don’t have to break his concentration with placing your laptop, installing a soundcard and wiring cables, causing unnecessary turmoil, frustration or even signal-loss.

After all, when you come to think of it, has there ever been a time where dj’s had to install their own SL-1210’s  or CDJ1000’s prior to their set? That’s right, and that’s why every club nowadays standard has two sets of Macbook pro with Traktor and Ableton installed, wired to a Allen and Heath Xone-92 plus fitting controller.

So.. few minutes to show-time! Gently you hit upon the Spotify/Cloud-button within Traktor on one of the Mac’s to login to your account. You open the playlist with today’s date: bam, there are your tracks. To outsmart possible internet-dropouts, you stick in your 500GB backup usb-stick. When the other dj is done playing and leaves the booth, you decide to go completely wild and also open your playlist on the other computer. Bass in your face London: here’s 8 tracks of Traktor. Cut the crap, and put it on.

Thanks all for the reactions on the previous posting (also to be found here, here and here). It seems that it’s quite a hot topic, with a broad spectrum of opinions. These are the results (as on June 4th):

Globally, something I’ve noticed is that most people who yet would like to see a change but nevertheless think that money will always be there, that people will always remain greedy, in other words; that everything will always stay like it is right now, handle a predominantly negative tone of voice. I think these are what we can call followers. The ones who think change is necessary and possible, speak out in a positive, energetic way and can be called leaders / visionairs. In-between are probably people who think it’s allright as it and don’t see the need for change (I sincerely envy your assumed happiness).

There is nothing wrong with being a follower or a leader of course. Throughout history, there have always been both of them. I have not found out yet to which kind I belong. In October of this year, I will be finishing ICM, as a graduated HBO student. I then get the chance to start looking for a job to get myself paid, make a career, buy a nice house, a nice car, and perhaps do some travelling or start a family. I wonder however if…

• …I want to spend my life life that, running in a tredmill like a rodent,
• …that would make me happy and in the end and…
• give me the conviction that I have done something with my life when I’m old.

Let’s not forget that this world is amidst two crises and that change is essential. Yes, we have the global recession, which is directly affecting all of us to a more or lesser extent, but please let us not forget the less visible but still steadily arising climate crisis. If I decide to follow the calibrated, conventional path, and if everybody with me does the same, then at one point of time we head for an apocalypse, as we will face global chaos, drown in our own garbage (or from flooding) or choke in a C02-surplus.

At the same time I realize that the world cannot be changed overnight, and that a not to be ignored part of me desires the life that I just described. What the heck, why not? Just live it! And I guess the outcome of those two extremes will, as always, lie in the middle.

I will continue to use this blog as a space to discuss or elaborate everything that is new, fresh and progressive, from pure digital stuff like social media and 2.0 to the more philosophic-oriented items like the current topic.

Are we facing the end of money soon? / Komt het bestaan van geld binnenkort ten einde?

The current economic crisis hits the world hard. Lots of companies have been forced to shut their doors forever, causing a huge increase in unemployment worldwide. Even countries theirselves are not safe: Iceland was the first country to be declared bankrupt, then came Dubai and one of the most recent examples is Greece. Several people, amongst whom investment-guru Jim Rogers claim that the UK is approaching the edge of economic meltdown as well. Furthermore, it is said that the USA, the UK and also the EU are currently printing lots of new money to dampen the national deficits. It is feared that this will lead to a hyperinflation just like in Zimbabwe (http://tinyurl.com/343awza).

The main reason of the crisis is, basically, that certain people have done dirty tricks with money. And, as if nothing happened, they still continue to do so after the economic meltdown.

What if we would cut out the money? What would happen then? What could be another way of value exchange?

Value determination afterwards / social capital

‘Value Determination Afterwards’ (‘Waardebepaling Achteraf’), is a currently fast growing phenomenon. Someone who works according to it, does not ask money for his services. He trusts in the fact that value would return to him eventually, in whatever form. Often this value is not returned in the the form of money, but with a product or a service.  See also http://tinyurl.com/3xsxxwh.

One of the most heard questions from people which hear about things like this is: but how does he pay his bills? How does he keep from starving to death? You’ll need some money sooner or later.

Bartering is back

One could conclude that money, as such, is quite an overestimated phenomenon. The reason for this is simple: money can buy you things, but it’s the things themselves that matter, not the money. Money itself does not have value; it’s the value we attribute to it that makes it worth more than the price of paper. Suppose you are somebody with a clever and commercial mind, and you get to know this owner of a supermarket. Suppose you’d give him tips and tricks on re-arranging his store, redesigning his brochure and changing the outlook of his display window in such a way that he doubles his yearly turnover. If he gives you a year of free shopping in return, the need of money is terminated in this case. Check out the website http://www.principieelsamenwerken.nl/. In the age of (web) 2.0, where transparency, exchange, equality and working together are keyterms, one could ask him/herself: does the principle of money still fit in here?

The discussion-question therefore is: Are we facing the end of money soon?

Komt het bestaan van geld binnenkort ten einde?

De economische crisis heeft de wereld hard geraakt. Duizenden bedrijven zagen zich genoodzaakt de deuren te sluiten, wat wereldwijd tot een enorme werkeloosheid heeft geleid. Zelfs naties zelf zijn niet veilig: IJsland was het eerste land dat bankroet ging, Dubai volgde en het meest recente voorbeeld is Griekenland. Verschillende mensen, waaronder investeerders-goeroe Jim Rogers claimen dat ook de UK de rand van de economische afgrond nadert. Bovendien lijken de USA, de UK en de EU behoorlijk wat geld aan het bijprinten te zijn om de nationale tekorten enigzins te dempen. Met wat pech kan dit leiden tot een hyperinflatie zoals in Zimbabwe (http://tinyurl.com/343awza).

De voornaamste oorzaak van het onstaan van de crisis is het misbruik van geld door bepaalde lieden. En, alsof er niks is gebeurd, gaan ze er gewoon mee door na het uitbreken van de financiele ellende.

Wat zou er gebeuren als we geld zouden afschaffen? Kan dat uberhaupt? Wat zou een andere manier zijn van waarde uitwisselen?

Waardebepaling achteraf

Waardebepaling Achteraf  is een momenteel aardig snel groeiend fenomeen. Iemand die volgens deze standard werkt, vraagt geen geld voor zijn of haar goederen of services, maar  vertrouwt erop dat de waarde ervan op een gegeven moment ‘vanzelf’ weer terugkomt, in welke vorm dan ook. Vaak is het geen geld dat wordt betaald, maar een ander produkt of service. (http://tinyurl.com/5qltr8).

Een van de meest gestelde vragen is dan meestal: maar hoe betaal je dan je rekeningen? Hoe hou je jezelf dan warm, droog en in leven? Je hebt, vroeg of laat, toch geld nodig.

Barteren is back

Je zou kunnen concluderen dat geld, an sich, een behoorlijk overschat fenomeen is. Met geld kun je dingen kopen, maar als iedereen van de een op de andere dag besluit dat het niks meer waard is, kun je er de kachel mee aanmaken, je huis mee behangen of je billen mee afvegen, maar er niet mee voorkomen dat je sterft van de honger. Geld zelf heeft dus geen waarde, het is de waarde die we er met z’n allen aan toekennen wat het meer waard maakt dan de prijs van oud papier.

Stel je voor dat je een commercieel ingesteld iemand bent met een scherpe geest, en je leert een supermarkteigenaar kennen. Stel je voor dat je hem tips ‘n tricks zou geven om zijn winkel te her-inrichten, z’n brochure te verbeteren en z’n etalage te restylen en wel zodanig, dat hij z’n jaarlijkse omzet ermee verdubbelt. Als hij je in ruil daarvoor een jaar gratis winkelen kado geeft, is de noodzaak voor geld, in dit geval, verdwenen. Check de website http://www.principieelsamenwerken.nl/. Dit platform is gelanceerd voor en door mensen die goederen en services ruilen voor… goederen en services.

In het (web) 2.0 tijdperk, waar transparantie, interactie, gelijkheid, eerlijkheid en samenwerken trefwoorden zijn, zou je jezelf kunnen afvragen: past het principe van geld hier nog wel in?

De discussie-vraag is derhalve: Komt het bestaan van geld binnenkort ten einde?
